The Top 5 Reasons to Work with a Team - Fuse Group Promos

I recently had the privilege of working with an amazing team of crazy, creative, hilarious, talented, goofballs to produce a series of four ridiculous promotional videos for Fuse Church.  Here they are, if you'd like to watch them...and I think you should.

Besides just being an absolute over the top blast and a valuable learning experience (as my work always seems to be...!), I was really blown away by how much I enjoyed working with a team.  Sometimes I can be a bit of a "lone wolf" so to speak, but recently, I've been growing to really value the power of a good team.  Here are my top 5 reasons to work with a team-

1.) More Creativity - Well this one is pretty obvious.  You know that old saying, "a herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest one"?  Well, as insightful as that may be for the buffaloes out there, with creativity it's the exact opposite.  You may think you're not that creative or "outside the box," but put yourself in a room with a few other people and suddenly your a complete genius.  Bounce a few lame ideas around in a room full of normal people and suddenly an avalanche of untapped brilliance floods into the room.  That's how most of the ideas for these videos were born!

2.) Delegation of Tasks - As a "one man show," you pretty much have to do...well, everything.  In the video world, that means scripting, storyboarding, planning, scheduling, set design, talent coaching, directing, shooting, editing, music, color, graphics, AHHHHH!H!!!!!  It can get overwhelming.  With a team, you can spread out the jobs to people who can make each specific aspect of the film their sole focus.  In these videos, I was far from a one man show.  While others were focusing on the direction of the actors, I was able to really hone in on composing my shots.  While others edited the clips into one sequence, I was able to put time into color and motion graphics.  It worked.

3.) You Can Always Use More Hands - So you never really know what needs are going to come up on the set.  It pays off to have some extra hands to some some odd jobs.  Take this photo documentation as an example:

In the first picture, you can see the set and filming process of the shot on the right.  Notice the guy on the floor holding the monitor.  Sure, seems like a menial job, but without him, we wouldn't have had the BEAUTIFUL blue light cresting off of the left side of movie man's face.  I guess what I'm saying is, without a team--you'll never have an extra guy to stick on the floor and hold a computer monitor at your talent's face.

4.) You Get to Make a Cameo Appearance - Yep....that's me!!!  With someone else operating the camera, I was able to make my first appearance in one of my own films!  AND MAN do I look goooood.....  This could never have happened without a team!

5.) It's Just Fun - Take a look at around the 1:30 mark in the "Crazy Dance Girl" Video.  Yep.  That's where it got crazy.  If for no other reason, working with a team is just FUN.

So there you have it folks, the top 5 reasons to work with a team!  Looking forward to doing it some more in the future!
